SFSU’s CAPI Program

”Thank you for taking such good care of us during the 2001–2002 CAPI program. Besides giving us much food for thought, you and your staff of dedicated teachers were excellent models of innovative, effective teaching … I (almost) can hardly wait to start the next school year!”

– Bette Asen-Loo, Modern History, Abraham Lincoln High School, SFUSD

San Francisco State University’s CAPI program, directed by Kathy Munderloh, SFSU Chemistry Department, is focused on collaboration among college professors and high school teachers throughout the district to develop effective techniques for increasing college-bound students’ proficiency in English and Math.

High school teachers receive up to $4,000 per year for participating, get the support of SFSU English lecturers in their classrooms, and often find teaching itself more rewarding and enjoyable as a result of their successes with the program.

The SFSU CAPI program has helped strengthen high school teaching methods, fostered collaboration between the college and high schools, and helped high school students become aware of what San Francisco State University has to offer them.

SFSU CAPI’s after-school Math Achievement Program (MAP) is delivered by graduate students at three high schools: Westmoor, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. Participating SFSU faculty and graduate students have developed tailored courseware for MAP that addresses the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) test, and have written and published a companion math workbook, now in its third revision, that focuses specifically on the proficiencies needed to pass the ELM.

SFSU CAPI’s English Reading and Writing program employs an English Reader, composed of selected readings, that was developed at Phillip and Sala Burton High School, a Teacher’s Manual to the Student Reader that guides teachers in conducting lessons using the Reader, and a variety of related professional training workshops for high school teachers.

The SFSU CAPI team strives to integrate new learnings and best practices into a set of proven techniques that can work for any teacher who wishes to apply them.
