Saturday Workshops

One benefit of the CAPI program is the Saturday Workshop series we offer to participating teachers each semester. The Saturday Workshops provide teachers with professional training designed to increase their success in the classroom and enhance their enjoyment of teaching.

Participating teachers are required to attend three Saturday Workshops per semester. The following are representative examples:

CATs: Classroom Assessment Techniques

Getting Students to Write Clear Thesis Statements

Heuristics: What They Are and How to Use Them

Supporting Students with Scaffolding

Writing Effective Assignments

Sample Agenda: Responding to Student Writing

Teacher Comments About What They Find Most Valuable

“The concrete examples used for the advertisement curriculum lessons were very valuable! It’s also great to have curriculum that can be used in the content areas so well.“

“TEA—Thesis, Example, Analysis. Group Projects. The book. It’s really too much information in one sitting!“

“The most beneficial thing I gained from the workshop is lots of material that I can use with my psychology classes! The ads mostly appeal to the lower primitive brain, which we are studying, and I wanted to use the ads to illustrate the importance of the ‘old brain.’ I will give them the essay assignment and use many of the exercises to help them see the psychological significance of the ads, as well as to explore their writing skills.“

“Collaborating with other teachers for assignments/ideas that ‘work.’”

“Hearing from other teachers about their ideas on how they plan to improve reading and writing skills in their classes.”

“… that the ESL students are not that different from the regular students. I’m looking forward to subsequent meetings. I think this is a recharge for me and to go back to the classroom.”

“Intro to what’s expected for my students once they get to State.”

“Talking to teachers and knowing we share the same issues and are all willing to sit down and come up with practical solutions.”

“Seeing that other teachers are struggling with the same problems as we are.”

“Meeting other teachers with similar concerns regarding meeting standards in a single class. Also, I have an excellent idea of what CSU freshman need to pass the placement exam.”

“That I need to incorporate the non-fiction reading into the curriculum just as much as fiction good to focus so intently on writing instruction and tackling things and then getting into it specifically.”
