CAPI Information Sharing

August 15, 2002

CAPI has been very busy! Here are a few of the accomplishments during the academic year.

The Binder / High School Student Response Project
At a meeting of all the Outreach programs called by Tom LaBell, the lack of high school student awareness of the SFSU campus and their general lack of knowledge on eligibility for SFSU was discussed.

To complement the work that Freida Lee does on outreach, CAPI purchased 800 binders, put flyers ‘From High School to SFSU’ from Freida Lee in each one and coordinated the delivery of classroom sets with the English outreach CAPI site coordinators.

High school students received the binder, paper, the flyer and a presentation on why go to SFSU. In return, high school students answered a few questions about their perceptions of the CAPI program. A brief summary of some of their comments is attached.

Mock ELM testing for the Mathematics Achievement Program (MAP)
Washington math teachers tested all their 10th and 11th grade students (1312 students), McAteer tested 250 students, and Westmoor tested 760 students. Results were returned to the high school teachers so they could better align math instruction with SFSU expectations. Dr. Marcucci and Kathy Munderloh presented at math department meetings. High school teachers discussed the results with students and encouraged them to take the MAP program.

The MAP program expanded from Westmoor and Jefferson to Washington and McAteer. Math graduate students hired by CAPI increased from 2 to 6. Graduate students applied and were selected by Dr. Marcucci, and approved by the Dean of the Math department.

Saturday workshops in English included teachers from 6 high schools with over 25 attendees at each meeting. Topics addressed were determined by collaborating with high school teachers, and presenters were from the SFSU English department, outside experts, and high school teachers.

The June 1st Saturday workshop was presented by high school teachers who modeled what had worked well with their students. This was extremely successful and furthered the sense of collaboration.

CAPI partnered with the Calif. Professional Development Institute to sponsor a Secondary Reading Institute. The kickoff was at O’Connel high school in the inner Mission. Over 60 teachers attended.

The week long institute from August 12–16 will be directed by Esther Chan, the CAPI coordinator at Lincoln High School, at that site. This program developed from meetings in Long Beach and meetings in Oakland and is funded by an expansion grant (No RFP was written.)

The MAP Workbook, based on the ELM topics, has been adopted as the text in a Washington classroom. Both the MAP workbook and the Student Reader developed at Burton High School by teachers and SFSU faculty have been adopted in the STEP to College program at Jefferson High school.

CAPI, PAD and FSMP presented a panel at the K-16 Partnerships and Student Success Conference at Long Beach on June 27th. This was well received and showed the collaboration at SFSU within programs.

Stephen Fredricks (a CAPI graduate student) and Kathy Munderloh presented the SFSU mathematics program at the annual CAPI math meeting in Los Angeles. Other campuses were highly impressed and asked for copies of the MAP workbook. These were mailed to them.

SFSU Faculty English coordinators wrote that they saw student improvement in critical thinking, active reading skills, schema building, and writing reports. In their final reports, the 12 high school teachers collaborators stated their high satisfaction with the CAPI program. They saw benefits to their students academically by the materials developed by the SFSU coordinators, modeling lessons, teaching strategies, and alignment of SFSU expectations with the Standards.

Students were also motivated by the presence of a visiting professor from a university. A web page is being designed to give general information about the CAPI program and to have links to other relevant web sites. The materials developed during the CAPI year will also be available on the web site. Please email me for any specifics.

Sincerely,

Kathy Munderloh
