CAPI Information Sharing

September 21, 2001

Setting up the Mathematics and English programs at the high schools takes a lot of meetings and discussions. Sheldon Axler let me know that he had six graduate students that were interested in working on the CAPI program. This meant finding new high schools to participate in our MAP program. The English Department had four lecturers, three continuing and one new recruit. The following is a report by school about meetings attended and progress made toward our goal to collaborate with high schools in reducing the need for remediation in incoming CSU students.

Westmoor: Student Population 1,805

I met with Principal Dick Morosi to discuss the partnership between SFSU and Westmoor. He was very enthusiastic and supportive.

English: I met with Sylvia Segal, English Department Chair, and described how we have set up the CAPI partnership between three teachers and one of our lecturers for classroom work. She recommended three teachers. Our lecturer, Jenna Palmer, and I met with these three teachers who read the contract and were ready to collaborate. Jenna has already started observing classes an has brought them the Diagnostic Writing Service (DWS) essay forms for the students to take the pre-evaluation.

Mathematics: Bob Marcucci and I met with Jeff Speranza, the Math Department Chair. He participated last year and was all set to go. Five classes (180 students) were evaluated with the Mock ELM and the results returned. I talked to three classes about their scores and encouraged them to take advantage of afternoon classes. Permission slips were sent home with the students and we are ready to start MAP on Oct. 1.

Balboa: Student Population 1,046

English: I met with Principal Patricia Gray who also attended our end of the year celebration last year, and reminded her of our collaboration. Kevin Conway, Sophia Ramirez and I met with Ted Barone, Vice Principal, and discussed the PAD and CAPI programs. Monday, Kevin Conway, our lecturer, will meet the three teachers he will observe and meet with this semester.

Burton: Student Population 1,674

English: I met with Principal Fredna Howell who asked me to put a paragraph in their newsletter about the CAPI program. I also met with Kathleen Vasquez, English Department Chair, who had two new teachers she wanted to work with Claudia Wilson (our outreach lecturer). Claudia and I met with these teachers and with another teacher recommended by the Chair of the Social Service Department, DWS evaluations were delivered and Claudia has started observing classes.

Lincoln: Student Population 2,416

English: I talked briefly with Ron Pang, who is back from sabbatical, about our program. Esther Chan (our lecturer) and I met with her three new teachers. The DWS were delivered at Lincoln and Esther is already busy in the classrooms. Esther discussed several of the after school workshops she has shared with other teachers and all her teachers signed their contracts.

McAteer: Student Population 1,118

I met with Principal Patricia Fiorello and described some of the CAPI programs and aims. Then Sophia Ramirez (PAD) and I met with Patricia, David Wu Vice Principal, and Sebastian Iacob, Mathematics Chair. I delivered Mock ELM tests to Sebastian and he is testing students who want to attend MAP. If we get a sign up of 15 or more, we will provide a MAP program.

Washington: Student Population 2,305

Dennis Norton, Assistant Principal of Curriculum, introduced me to the new principal, Andrew Ishibashi. I briefly informed him that SFSU has a strong collaboration going with Washington High School. Bob Marcucci and I had a lunchtime meeting with the Math Department and talked about the MAP program. The teachers were very enthusiastic and have tested over 25 classes (600 students) with the Mock ELM. At the Wednesday morning department meeting, Dr. Marcucci and I will explain the results of these evaluations and sign up students to begin the MAP program. We are expecting a large sign-up and probably three graduate students will work there.

English: I met briefly with our collaborators from last year and they are continuing to incorporate what they learned in our collaboration into their classes. Jane Fonda has given a large grant to the school, which one of our collaborators, Terri Camajani, is administering.

Jefferson: Student Population 1,296

I called the chair of the Math Department several times, with no response. I spoke with Pilar Coronado, Chair of the English Department, and we have scheduled a meeting to go over the her DWS results from the last semester when all English classes were tested (213 students). Jefferson would like to participate with us more, and I am working on a way to do this.

Since both our lecturers and the results of our assessment show that many students lack basic reading skills, some resources have been suggested for the high school teachers. These include “I Read It, But I Don’t Get It” and “Mosaic of Thought.”

September is a busy month, but the program is progressing and expanding. Please send me any questions you have about what we are currently doing.

Sincerely,

Kathy Munderloh
