CAPI MAP Math Workbook |
Introduction
The Mathematics Achievement Program (MAP) is part of the Collaborative Academic Preparation Initiative (CAPI) at San Francisco State University. CAPI is funded by the California State University (CSU) system. The primary goals of CAPI are to increase proficiency in the mathematics and English skills of incoming CSU freshmen and to promote collaboration between CSU faculty and students and their high school counterparts.
MAP started in Fall 2000 at Jefferson High School in Daly City, California. College-intending juniors were invited to attend after-school sessions directed by San Francisco State University mathematics graduate students in which the high school students solved problems and presented their solutions. They were also taught how to use a graphing calculator as a problem-solving tool.
The sessions provided Jefferson students with opportunities to sharpen their understanding of mathematical concepts and to improve their communications skills. In addition, the mathematics covered in MAP sessions provides review for most of the topics tested on the CSUs Entry Level Mathematics examination. MAP has since expanded to several other local high schools.
The problems used in the after-school sessions at Jefferson have evolved into this workbook of mathematical topics. The workbook, and MAPs success, would not be possible without the talented and dedicated graduate students who have participated in MAP. Jon Freedman and Jenny Smith, both outstanding teachers, developed many of the topics while working at Jefferson. Stephen Fredricks, Tracey Jackson, and Betsy Koehler also made significant contributions, expanding the scope of the original topics and adding several new ones. And finally, many thanks to Abi Leaf, Emily Putnam, Amy Starks, and Brian Tenneson, who did an excellent job of proof reading the manuscript and checking the accuracy of the answers to the exercises.
