Unit II: Student Essay Assignment

Gender Essay

Choose one of the following essay assignments.

  1. Write an essay in which you explain which male and female behaviors might be due to innate differences and which might be produced by environmental influences (nature versus nature).

  2. Write an essay in which you take a position on whether male and female behavioral differences are mostly due to environmental influences or whether they are mostly caused by biological differences.

Use readings, class discussions, and your personal experiences to support your ideas.

Self-check: Answer the questions while re-reading your essay. Make necessary changes in your essay to improve it. Hand in with your essay.

  1. Does your thesis statement guide your essay? Does it introduce the topic and give your angle? How do you evaluate your thesis statement?

  2. Look at each topic sentence. Does the topic sentence introduce the paragraph and tie back to the thesis? Is it a strong sentence that gives the topic and interests the reader in the paragraph? If yes, why do you feel your topic sentences are effective? If no, what can you do to change them to make them more effective?

  3. Do you include a variety of evidence, including personal experience, quotes, facts and opinions? Which kind of evidence do you find most effective? Why? Do you feel that each paragraph has enough evidence to prove the argument? If so how? If not, what can you include in order to convince yourself and the reader?

  4. Do you use at least 3 quotations from the articles to support your arguments? Did you introduce the quote? Did you express your own ideas about the quote and connect it to your main point? How do you feel quotations work in the essay (in terms of support or evidence)?

  5. Did you include 5–8 coordinators or transition words or phrases in your essay? How do you feel they fit into your essay? How do you feel they communicate your ideas? Check to make sure you used them effectively and didn’t repeat the use of any common coordinator too often.
